  • Benefits of Living in a Small Town

I lost my phone at the library a few years back, and the librarian at the time recognized the photo on the screensaver, and saved the phone for us the next time we came in. The photo was of my husband and son.

The spare keys went missing a few days ago, after we picked up my in-laws at the airport. My mother-in-law made a full set at the neighborhood supply store, where they invited us over for Christmas Eve lucky number drawing (for a widescreen TV).

Just today, I heard from the manager at the nearby condos, where my mother-in-law and grandmother-in-law stay when they're visiting. Incidentally, the manager is also the mother of my son's classmate, and we do a carpool into town for the elementary school. Anyway, the manager said, Monica, we have your keys!

    Apparently:

    • The keys were dropped in the condo parking lot.
    • Another resident turned them into lost-and-found.
    • There were no identifying marks on the set of keys, but there was a postal box key, so the condo manager called the local post office. (There's just one main post office in town, and two satellite smaller ones.)
    • The postmaster looked up the key number and said it was ours. (By the way, the postmaster also knows us by name when we come to the counter to pick up packages.)
    • The manager just happened to have our home phone number, so...

Bob's your uncle -- we pick up our keys.

Imagine living in a place where the librarian, the local shopkeeper, the condo manager, and the postmaster all know you and your family by name.

    I like it!

  • Make a Difference - Build a Well with Me for Blog Action Day - Water

It's Blog Action Day, and as part of our global discussion on how to make a difference on the topic of Water, we are building a well for a deserving community.

    http://mycharitywater.org/womenentrepreneurs - donate $12.99

    Consider the following:

    1) One in eight of us on the planet lack access to clean, safe drinking water.

Remember the last time you poured yourself a glass of water, boiled something for your meal, or washed your vegetables or fruits in water? The 7/8 of us on the planet who have access to clean drinking water are fortunate - we live like royalty! As part of a global perspective, let's also commit to bringing water to the 1/8 of our planet who does not have it.

    2) Unsafe drinking water and lack of sanitation kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war.

Water-borne diseases include E. coli, salmonella, cholera and hepatitis A. The lack of safe water leads to 42,000 deaths each week, including children. Let's do our part.

    3) More people have access to a cell phone than to a toilet.

Today, 2.5 billion people lack access to toilets. Millions of tons of sewage spill into our rivers and streams, contaminating drinking water and causing disease. Let's focus on cleanliness and infrastructure by assisting our global family members in receiving access to basic sanitation.
